A sump pump is the heart of most Rockland waterproofing systems and the single point of failure in most Rockland basement floods. Pumps fail from age (seven to ten years is a typical life), from stuck float switches, from a check valve that lets the discharge line drain back and short-cycles the motor, from a frozen or crushed discharge line, and most often from a power outage in the middle of a nor'easter or a summer thunderstorm, which is when the pit is filling fastest. Every one of those has a cheap fix if it is done before the storm.
Sizing: a third- or half-horsepower cast-iron submersible pump handles most Rockland houses; high-water-table areas (Congers, West Nyack, the Pascack and Mahwah valleys) and deep pits get a half or three-quarter horsepower pump with a larger pit so it cycles less. Pedestal pumps are cheaper and louder and belong in shallow pits. Backups: a battery backup pump sits beside the main pump with its own float and runs for hours on a deep-cycle battery; a water-powered backup uses municipal water pressure to eject sump water through a venturi, runs indefinitely without electricity, and is the better choice for houses on town water with long outages, but not for well-water homes (the well pump needs power too). Alarms: a high-water alarm, ideally one that texts you, costs little and tells you the main pump has failed before the floor is wet.
Discharge lines in a Rockland winter
Where the water goes matters as much as the pump. The discharge should exit the house above grade, run at least 10 feet from the foundation (farther on flat lots), and end at daylight or a drywell, never into the footing drains, the sewer (illegal in Rockland's sewer districts) or the neighbor's yard. In January an exposed discharge freezes solid and the pump burns out pushing against ice; freeze-relief fittings near the house and a buried line with a proper outlet prevent it. Contractors in Rockland see burned-out pumps every February from exactly this.

Ranges are published 2026 national figures (Angi's and HomeGuide's basement waterproofing cost guides for typical projects, interior French drain and exterior excavation ranges; HomeGuide and Angi sump pump and foundation crack repair pages; crawl space encapsulation figures from HomeGuide), not quotes from this site. Rockland quotes for interior drainage systems typically run in the upper half of national ranges. Details: Rockland waterproofing cost guide.
How it works
- Tell us about the job. Where and when the water shows up, whether the basement is finished, and whether there is a sump already. Photos help.
- We match you with a local pro. One independent waterproofing contractor, licensed in Rockland County and insured, that serves your town. We do not send your request to five companies.

Questions
How much does a sump pump installation cost in Rockland County?
HomeGuide and Angi 2026 figures: a new pit, pump and discharge $1,000 to $3,000; replacing a pump in an existing pit $400 to $1,200; a battery backup pump $400 to $1,500 installed. Water-powered backups are similar once the plumbing is run.
Battery or water-powered backup?
On town water with frequent long outages, water-powered runs forever without a battery to maintain. On well water, battery is the only option. Many Rockland houses in the wettest areas have both.
How often should I replace my sump pump?
Test it every spring and fall by lifting the float; plan on replacing a submersible pump at seven to ten years, sooner if it runs constantly. Replace the check valve and inspect the discharge at the same time.
Can my sump discharge into the sewer?
No. Rockland County Sewer District No. 1 and the municipal systems prohibit sump and footing-drain connections; it overloads the plants during storms and is inspected at sale in some municipalities. Discharge to daylight, a drywell or a storm drain where permitted.
